Leveraging the power of education and literacy to enhance community vitality.

Dear Friends,

We send you happy holiday greetings and are hopeful that you and yours are safe and well.  Your continued support this past year has given us much to reflect on and much for which we are grateful.  Please know that your generosity has been the key to sustaining the programs we continue to offer to the community of San Juan del Sur, even during these difficult times.  We could not continue in this effort without your ongoing support!  Gracias a todos!

~Patricia J. Herron,

Vice President HJH Foundation Board

While no crafts for Christmas projects can happen this year, here are memories of past projects.

Reopening of the Library in SJDS

We are delighted to announce that the library has reopened as of December 14th. The need to access books and information has increased significantly in Nicaragua because of the pandemic, and we feel our library staff have developed a plan that will allow them to check books and materials out and be safe while doing so. At this time, the library will only be open for books to be checked in and out. Although computers have been highly requested, we have made the difficult decision to keep our media room closed for the time being as the space is too small and attracts large crowds.

Safety measures at the library.

Summer/Fall Matching Grant Success

Our Matching Grant campaign that started this summer and ran until early fall was a wonderful success! We were lucky to receive an extension on the Summer Grant which replaced our annual BP Matching Grant that ended when our good friend Craig Deaves retired from British Petroleum.

Thank you everyone for your support with this Matching Grant. The participation was outstanding, and together we have received over $21,000. This was tremendous support in these dire times and provided for almost a fourth of our base annual budget.

We know Matching Grants are so useful and encouraging to our supporters, and we are continuing to seek out additional opportunities for 2021. I would encourage everyone to check out their employers’ Ambassador and Matching Gift programs and those of their family and friends. Google says the following:
78% of match-eligible donors don’t know their company offers a matching gift program, and only 7% of donors at companies with matching gift programs actually submit a request.

(Avanzando) Moving Forward

Like most things in our world, COVID-19 has drastically changed the way the SJDS Biblioteca operates. At the beginning of the pandemic, we made a commitment to our staff that they would continue to receive their salaries no matter what. Although the doors to the library closed in early March, the work from our staff never stopped. They worked tirelessly to help their communities by printing 3D face shields, sewing cloth face masks, purchasing essential supplies for families in need, delivering medical supplies to doctors and nurses, and delivering supplies to over 600 families.

Although the library was created to enhance literacy in Nicaragua, it has always been about so much more than that. The library continues to be a community resource that finds new and innovative ways to provide for its patrons and the community. With the library’s small-scale reopening, we are happy to get back to our roots of putting books in the hands of Nicaraguans, but that won’t stop us from finding ways to meet the needs of the communities we service.

We hope that we will be able to resume our mobile project next year and continue to spread the reach of our impact. And if 2020 has taught us anything, it is that we can always find additional ways to make a difference. Please consider making a year-end contribution to propel our work into the new year.

COVID-19 Status in Nicaragua

As we reported in our September newsletter, the numbers of COVID-19 cases and deaths reported by the Nicaraguan government vary widely from those provided by independent sources.

The Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Resource Center is a highly respected and heavily referenced data center. Data reported by the JHU Center are provided by the Nicaraguan Ministry of Health (MINSA).

Observatorio Ciudadano Nicaragua

The COVID-19 Citizen Observatory is an interdisciplinary, collaborative effort for gathering information from organizations, networks, and citizens of Nicaragua. The mission of Observatorio Ciudadano is to fill the gap in information on the situation of COVID-19 in Nicaragua.

On December 18, the national newspaper La Prensa reported the same data from Observatorio Ciudadano.

San Juan is becoming busier and more savvy; now, masks are required in many tiendas and restaurants and of course outdoor dining is easier here! Hotels are open mostly on weekends, and more care seems to be being taken to social distance. There is a surge of COVID cases in San Juan after the Purisima celebrations, much like the U.S. surge after Thanksgiving.

Purisima 2020

Most in San Juan had to forgo the delightful events of Purisima. Here are photos of the December 2017 Purisima that many of us, including the GRIP program participants that year, attended at the home of Heidy Herrera’s mother.

COVID-19 Relief Efforts

The HJH Foundation was able to work with Rotary International to use remaining funds from a water and sanitation grant and redistribute those funds for COVID-19 relief projects. In total,10,000 dollars remained. Two thirds of the money was used to provide food essentials and sanitation supplies, and the other third was used to purchase medical supplies for doctors and nurses. We provided basic items like rice, beans, soap, etc. to families in the five communities where the grant was used to focus on sanitation efforts. The Rotary funds also allowed us to purchase PPE’s (personal protective equipment) for doctors and nurses at the medical clinic in SJDS.

Additionally, the Rotary Club of Keene NH provided supplies for several families in the Chereca (Dump) community of Masatepe. The Keene Rotary Club typically brings a group of high school students to Nicaragua annually to complete service projects. When they saw the baskets we were providing in SJDS, they reached out to us to see if we could provide them for this community with their funds. The supplies were given out in two separate rounds that were a few months apart. Over 90 families were included.

The Foundation also partners with the Council Tree Covenant Church in Fort Collins CO to provide annual Christmas baskets to the rural community of Ameya located in the northern part of Nicaragua. This year, members of the church were able to raise all of the funds needed to supply 150 baskets and to increase the size of those baskets.

Although we were lucky enough to fare relatively well during both hurricanes  in SJDS, Ameya was not as fortunate. As they are recovering from the damage, these Christmas baskets are more important than ever before.

Jane’s Winter 2020 Note

Well, as this most unusual year comes to a close I am reflecting on the range of experiences we have shared. January and February 2020 were such promising times. The VOSH eye doctor project saw nearly 11,000  people in January for eye care at the Rubin Mongalo school in San Juan. The Union Church mission from Waban MA In February helped complete renovations for the water and electric power project started by the Rockwall TX Rotary ‘s Global Grant.  The 3-D printer project initiated in November 2019 was well underway.
These were optimistic days. Plans were underway for several more projects and groups and even a Summer 2020 Mini-Grip (Global Responsibility Internship Program). Over $2,000 in new books had been purchased for the Opportunity Tree Foundation’s satellite library project, books that were intended for classrooms in 13 different schools. We were ready! Then March came. The pandemic hit, COVID appeared, and we are all still working through what came next.
I am happy to report that, while there were many great losses, we are still here and working hard to recoup educational and economic losses as well as assist with repairing the emotional  impact of these past months for so many. The library reopened in December, and an aggressive educational program is planned for the mobile project when schools open in February 2021. Our 3-D printer program will get a needed retraining and revision program, and the special Rx glasses sent to me from VOSH eye doctors will finally be delivered, that is as soon as there are flights again into Nicaragua. Many of us have watched each month as the plans to resume flights keep getting pushed back. The latest date for most U.S. carriers is now mid-February.
I have been deeply thankful for the determination and hard work of the San Juan del Sur Biblioteca staff as they have persevered through these past difficult months. They have provided COVID relief with the help of generous grants, shared necessary information with the community, and provided PPE equipment for hospital and ambulance workers. They have distributed masks and COVID protection information and conducted food drives for San Juan and the communities served by the mobile project. Members of the HJH Advisory Board have met over Zoom with the library staff nearly every two weeks throughout these past months, and together we have kept going and providing what we could in creative, new ways.
We all thank you for your support. We offer you our happy holiday wishes and optimistic hopes for the new year. Please join us however you can to support our movement forward into 2021.

Take good care, be well,
Jane
