Hester J Hodgdon Libraries for All

Leveraging the power of education and literacy to enhance community vitality.

Today is Giving Tuesday, A global day of charitable giving!

November is the month for giving thanks as we surround ourselves with family and friends. It is also the time to respond to #GivingTuesday, a global movement created to inspire generosity around the world.  Over the past few weeks, we have shared personal stories on our facebook page that illustrate the impact of your giving on the people and communities we serve.  The mission of the Hester J. Hodgdon Libraries for All Foundation is to leverage the power of education and literacy to enhance community vitality. The stories highlighted below focus on the themes of education, literacy, and community vitality.

We have launched a fundraising campaign on Facebook with a goal of reaching $5,000 in donations. We know with your help, we can do it! Facebook is giving 100% of your donation to us without taking any processing fees and they are also matching up to 8 million dollars in donations made using their platform on Giving Tuesday. Matches are not guaranteed, but there is a chance that we could get a boost if you donate today!

Success Stories!

Over the years, the HJH Foundation has assisted many students with their higher education needs. They have completed degrees to become Accountants, Veterinarians, English Teachers and more!

Education:

Marilya is an ambitious young woman who lives near Managua and teaches Spanish at La Mariposa Spanish School. Her dream has been to complete a university degree, and, with the help of the HJH Foundation, she returned to her studies at Universidad del Valle earlier this year. Marilya is pursuing a degree in English language studies and working toward a career in fields such as teaching or translating that requires her language skills.

Literacy:

Nicaragua is known as “a nation of poets.” Ruben Dario and Ernesto Cardenal, renowned Nicaraguan poets, are giants of world literature.  Learning to appreciate literature by reading, writing, and reciting poetry are common learning outcomes in many classrooms.  Each year on its anniversary, the San Juan del Sur Library invites the youth from the community to express what the library means to them by submitting an original poem, essay, or drawing to a competition.  In this post and a post to follow, we will share some of the competition winners.  Their beautiful poems tell the story of the power of words and books.

Community Development:

The Library’s Sueños3D Printing Center is embracing an opportunity to enhance community vitality in San Juan del Sur.  Through its burgeoning educational program, it is empowering the youth of the town, teaching them state of the art 3D printing technology, and fostering creativity and innovation.  Wiston Noguera, the Director of Sueños3D gives his assessment of the importance of this Center to his community in the video below.
This is our third year participating in the Giving Tuesday moment and it is so exciting to be able to be a part of this movement to inspire generosity. We hope you will consider making us your charitable organization of choice today and we extend our deepest gratitude to all of the supporters who have contributed to this campaign and all of the others through over the years.
