Today Is The Big Day!

Today Is The Global Day of Giving – Giving Tuesday

We would greatly appreciate it if you would consider making us your non-profit of choice this Giving Tuesday to support our programs in Nicaragua.

This Giving Tuesday, we have a goal to raise $3,900 – one month’s basic operating expenses for the library. This amount pays for six full time staff members, building rent, electricity, and gas to fuel visits to 39 mobile projects in the areas surrounding San Juan del Sur.

Giving Tuesday is a social movement and a lot of the action is posted on social media. This week our Facebook page has been highlighting several of our recent projects. You can view the posts on our page and make sure to like us so you stay up to date on the happenings!

We have a few needs this giving Tuesday:
  • Wiston has successfully developed and taught an introductory course in 3D printing and modeling technology to several groups of students. He would like to continue offering these classes and there is a significant amount of interest from local high school students. A donation of $300 would cover the entire cost to offer the program to six young learners.

  • We have a growing need to expand our recurring monthly donor base. We currently have a handful of donors who graciously support our projects on a monthly basis and help us predict the amount of funding we will have each month. Our current recurring donations only cover $1100 of the monthly $3,900 that keeps our library doors open and our mobile truck running. If you are able to contribute to our foundation on a monthly basis it would greatly lift the often heavy weight of knowing if we can cover our monthly expenses in times when donations are low.
On November 11th, the library celebrated its 22nd anniversary in traditional style with a grand fiesta in the park. Over 400 people were in attendance participating in a full day of activities. The morning brought arts and crafts in the park, an annual chess competition, piñatas, and soccer competitions. Lunch was served to everyone who attended and the local teachers participated in a craft activity and teacher appreciation lunch.
The afternoon brought on the annual reading of Jumpstart’s Read for the Record 2023 book Con Mucho Amor (With Lots of Love) and awards for students ranging from best reader to best poem. Below are this year’s winning poems that have been faithfully translated to the best of our abilities.
This annual event not only celebrates the library’s success, but it reminds all of us how important these projects are to the communities we serve. Library staff taxi students into town using our mobile trucks to ensure they are able to join in the celebration. Many students tell us it is the highlight of the year, and that was obvious at this year’s celebration.

For 22 years, the library has been intertwined with the heart and soul of San Juan del Sur. It has put books in the hands of thousands of children, grown into an active community center, technology hotspot, and more. The library provides a service the people of San Juan del Sur can lean on and a bridge that connects many moving parts.

We hope you will join us in celebrating the great success of the library this Giving Tuesday and help us reach our goal!
